A Proclamation

Whereas, March 6th is recognized as World Lymphedema Day to bring patient-driven awareness to lymphedema and other lymphatic diseases; and
Whereas, Lymphedema results in the accumulation of lymph fluid in the limbs and affects up to 10 million Amercians and 170 million people worldwide; and
Whereas, Lymphedema can be hereditary or acquired as a result of cancer treatment or physical trauma due to damage to the lymphatic system; and
Whereas, 30 percent of women who survive breast cancer will get lymphedema, and survivors of prostate cancer, ovarian cancer, and melanoma are also susceptible; and
Whereas the effects of lymphedema are lifelong and drastically affect a person's quality of life, even leading to a shortened lifespan; and
Whereas, The Lymphatic Education and Research Network is an active group in the Commonwealth comprised of patients, physical therapists, occupational therapists, nurses, and doctors working toward groundbreaking research advancements; and
Whereas, Bringing attention to lymphatic diseases and lymphedema in the Commonwealth is important to spur action that will lead to new treatments, and, one day, a cure,
Now, Therefor, I, Charles D. Baker, Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, do hereby proclaim March 6th 2018 to be


MASSACHUSETTS LYMPHEDEMA DAY


And urge all the citizens of the Commonwealth to take
cognizance of this event and participate fittingly in its observance

Given at the Executive Chamber in Boston, this sixth day of March in the year two thousand and eighteen, and of the Independence of the United States of America, the two hundred and forty-first.
