AT Bill Moves Forward

Action Alert:
Stop S. 1216, An Act Relative To Athletic Training

We Need You to Call Today!

SB 1216 was pulled from a study bill in Public Health today, signaling the increasing likelihood of a vote in the Massachusetts Senate.  If you are concerned with the provisions of this bill, you need to call your State Senator today!

SB 1216, An Act Relative to Athletic Training would expand the definition of who athletic trainers could treat to include virtually anyone.  It would eliminate the distinction in scope of practice between PTs and ATCs, despite the additional education and training of every licensed physical therapist.

Our message is simple:

  • We are opposed to S. 1216 because it expands the Athletic Training scope of practice beyond their education and training and puts patients at risk.
  • We respect the current work of ATs and want them to continue work in schools, sports organizations, concussion prevention.
  • This bill would change ATC patients from “athletes” to “patients” and greatly reduce any supervision they receive from a physician.
  • This bill would allow ATCs to treat patients for which they have insufficient education and training (strokes, TBI, co-morbidities, etc.)

The ask:

  • Use the link below to contact your State Senator.
  • Urge them to vote "NO" on S 1216
  • Let them know why you are concerned about expanding the ATC scope to include patients beyond their education and training.
