Clarification regarding APTA MA’s Role in the New Continuing Competency Licensure Requirements

February 9, 2023 By APTA MA

All PT and PTA licensure regulations, statutes and enforcement is controlled by the Bureau of Health Professions Licensure (formerly Board of Allied Health) and the Department of Public Health (DPH). Representatives of APTA MA (the member based professional association for PTs, PTAs and PT / PTA students) and/or lobbyists retained by APTA MA will attend public hearings regarding new licensure regulations to ask questions, seek clarification, and provide interpretations for APTA MA members.

APTA MA is very mindful about its communication regarding licensure requirements as this is governed by DPH not APTA MA.

APTA MA provides resources and interpretations regarding these new regulations for its' members.

APTA MA has always offered course providers with a course review and approval service. This service (with a fee) reviews courses for quality and evidence-based practice. Courses are approved if they meet guidelines established by APTA MA. If courses are approved through this process, the course meets the regulatory requirements for points towards continuing competency for licensure.

APTA MA does not assist the DPH in determining if all courses a licensee submits meet the regulatory requirements.

APTA MA members can join Mighty Networks, our members-only communication platform to ask questions and see answered questions from APTA MA Leadership regarding continuing competency requirements.

May 25, 2022

  • Hi APTA MA Member,

I am writing to share significant news with you all today.  After nearly 20 years on ongoing efforts here in the Commonwealth, continuing education (competency) regulations for physical therapist and physical therapist assistant have been passed by the Board of Allied Health.  The language was officially promulgated on April 29th with some additional clarifications regarding implementation having been recently posted.  Official language is attached here.

    What does this mean?

    • 24 CEU credits will be required during your 24 month renewal period.  All credits  must be obtained during that 2 year time frame
      • 2 of the 24 credits must be completed in the realm of ethics and jurisprudence
    • CEU requirements will begin September of 2022.  1 credit per month will be required until your first renewal date (see attached compliance chart)
    • All credits taken since your last renewal date may be counted toward your requirements

The Board of Allied Health will communicate further as well with your renewal notifications.  APTAMA will continue to communicate all information as we have it regarding clarifications and mechanisms that APTAMA will be putting in place to facilitate continuing competence for membership.  We will also be hosting an informative townhall alongside the July 19 Board of Directors Meeting.  We will be sending more details as we get closer to the date.  We are delighted to share this important milestone.

    Sincerely,

    Eric Folmar, President APTA MA
